King Khan & The Shrines – “Born to Die” (Stereogum Premiere) King Khan & The Shrines – “Born to Die” (Stereogum Premiere)

The soul-garage freakout warriors King Khan & The Shrines have been away for a while, but they’ll be back this fall with a new album called
Idle No More
, one that, according to Khan himself, is “about the state of the world we live in today.” The first song we’ve heard from the album is a fiery, charged-up number called “Born To Die,” and its horn-happy mayhem has nothing to do with Lana Del Rey. Also, the band’s wild live show is going on the road this fall. Listen to “Born To Die” and check out the band’s dates below.

The Julie Ruin – “Oh Come On” The Julie Ruin – “Oh Come On”

Julie Ruin is the name that the former Bikini Kill/Le Tigre leader Kathleen Hanna took when she released a 1997 album of home-recorded synthpop experiments.
Julie Ruin is Hanna’s new band, which also features the former Bikini Kill bassist Kathi Wilcox. And when the Julie Ruin release their debut album
Run Fast
in a few months, it’ll mark Hanna’s first full-length in the nine years since Le Tigre’s swan song
This Island
. After a long break due in part to Hanna’s battle with Lyme Disease, Hanna is once again firing on all cylinders, if the
Run Fast
track “Oh Come On” is any indication. It’s an awesomely sneering and charged-up punk rock song, the sort of thing that Hanna does better than just about anyone else, and you can hear it below.

R.I.P. Ray Manzarek R.I.P. Ray Manzarek

We can argue about the musical and cultural value of the Doors, but it would be straight-up inaccurate to classify them as anything less than one of America’s truly legendary rock groups. And I think it’s fair to say, too, that Ray Manzarek was as essential to the Doors’ success as Jim Morrison, maybe more so. Manzarek more or less discovered Morrison, and encouraged him to sing, and Manzarek’s keyboard was absolutely as central to the Doors’ sound as Morrison’s vocals (the Doors never employed a bass player, because Manzarek played those parts on his Fender Rhodes piano). When you’re thinking of a Doors song — any Doors song — I’d be willing to bet you’re just as likely to call to mind the keyboard part as you are the vocal. Of course Morrison died in 1971, at age 27. Manzarek continued t

Premature Evaluation: Queens Of The Stone Age …Like Clockwork Premature Evaluation: Queens Of The Stone Age …Like Clockwork

Last June, we published a feature called the
Top 20 Albums We’ve Been Waiting For Forever

HAIM were on this week’s episode of
Later With Jools Holland
and performed “Forever” from their EP of the same title. While each sister in the band is bursting with panache, we can all agree that the ever-emotive bassist Este’s facial contortions while they’re playing are totally mesmerizing? Total dedication to nailing every single bass chord. Watch their performance below.

Lemuria – “Brilliant Dancer” Lemuria – “Brilliant Dancer”

The Buffalo trio Lemuria combine skronky post-hardcore dynamics with sweet and open-hearted melodies. Bands who made that sort of warm and honest racket used to be called “emo,” but then emo became a dirty word, and in any case it never quite fit with, say, Rainer Maria, maybe Lemuria’s clearest antecedent. So let’s just call Lemuria an exceptionally good indie rock band and note that
The Distance Is So Big
, their new album, is coming soon. They recorded it with the great producer J. Robbins, and the first track they’ve shared is the gorgeous “Brilliant Dancer,” which you can hear below.

Daughn Gibson – “The Sound Of Law” Daughn Gibson – “The Sound Of Law”

Last year,
Daughn Gibson
, a foxy Pennsylvania man who used to play drums for stoner-rockers Pearls & Brass, released the solo debut
All Hell
, which threw Gibson’s miles-deep voice over soft electronic soundscapes in ways that reminded me a whole lot of the Crash Test Dummies. On the strength of that album, Gibson signed to
Sub Pop
, and now he’s getting ready to follow it up with the ridiculously titled new LP
Me Moan
. The album features guitars from Baroness frontman John Baizley, and the rushing first single “The Sound Of Law” is darker and more propulsive than anything on
All Hell
. Hear it below.

The 10 Most Anticipated Record Store Day 2013 Releases The 10 Most Anticipated Record Store Day 2013 Releases

It’s that time of the year again, everybody! The best holiday of the year (yes, better than National Ferris Wheel Day AND Leif Erikson Day) has
. I’ve been going to Record Store Day since 2009, and even when I didn’t look up the releases beforehand, I’d still walk out of my favorite record store (RIP Cutlers in New Haven) with something unique and special. Unique and special is what Record Store Day does incredibly well, and it’s why we love it so much. Since its relatively humble beginnings in 2008, the event has grown in popularity every year. So even if you don’t get out to record stores much anymore, this is one of those days where you want to try.

Moby and Mark Lanegan both do a ton of work with different artists, but it’s still a bit of a surprise to see them working with each other. The new Record Store Day single “The Lonely Night” has Lanegan’s dusky vocals over a pretty downtempo track from Moby, and its new video, from director

Junip – “Your Life, Your Call” Junip – “Your Life, Your Call”

On his own, the Swedish singer-songwriter José González makes spare, lonely, spectral music. As the frontman of the Gothenburg trio Junip, he does much the same thing, except he does it with a moody-but-smooth post-rock band behind him. Junip are about to drop their self-titled sophomore album, and we’ve posted first single “

its unsettling video
. And now here’s the next one, a downtrodden, beautiful synth-pulse called “Your Life, Your Call.” Download it below.

Ghost B.C. – “Year Zero” Video (NSFW) (Stereogum Premiere) Ghost B.C. – “Year Zero” Video (NSFW) (Stereogum Premiere)

The theatrical, absurdist Swedish metal band Ghost B.C., previously known as just plain Ghost, are the latest band to find international fame by scaring the hell out of parents and authority figures, dressing up as cult members and demon-priests and plying an infernally catchy form of craftsmanship. Last year, we posted their Dave Grohl-abetted cover of Abba’s “
I’m A Marionette
,” and now they’re getting ready to unleash the sophomore album
upon the planet. Below, we’ve got the super-NSFW video for their song “Year Zero.” It’s gleefully Satanic silliness about a coven of witches who welcome a dark stranger into their midst. Nudity abounds.

Primal Scream – “It’s Alright, It’s OK” Primal Scream – “It’s Alright, It’s OK”

Veteran Scottish drug-rockers Primal Scream have a new album called
More Light
coming out soon, and we’ve already posted their confrontational “
” video. But the second of the album’s tracks they’ve shared, “It’s Alright, It’s OK,” takes the band completely out of the snarly garage-rock thing they’ve been working lately and pushes them back into the Stones territory they once spent entire albums exploring. The song has some seriously big and meaty hooks, as well as acoustic guitar and and bongos and pimp-roll pianos and a gospel choir, and I feel pretty comfortable calling it the best Primal Scream song since at least the
Evil Heat
era. (And I really liked the
Evil Heat
era.) Listen to it below.

Danny Brown – “Kush Coma” (Prod. by Skywlkr) Danny Brown – “Kush Coma” (Prod. by Skywlkr)

Without even listening to it, you know Danny Brown’s “Kush Coma” is a song about weed — and not just weed, but smoking to the point of incapacitation. But for a song about getting nihilistically high, there’s a lot of care put into flow and vocal melody. One of the best things about Danny is that you can tell that a lot of what he does as an artist is very protracted. When he
, “cant wait to perform this and have the whole crowd singing the hook thats gonna be wavy,” I don’t think he’s referring to the ethereal, pothead choral performed by fellow Bruiser Zeelooperz punctuating the track. Rather, it’s the jawful about being the last guy in the cypher as he is slowly fading into a green-colored catatonia. It’s also why the Zeelooperz bit is so perfectly placed — the Skywlkr beat soun
