IRS executed search warrant that seized 60 million medical records

Quote:
Republican members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee are looking into allegations that the Internal Revenue Service seized 60 million medical records from a California health care provider.
“(T)he Committee on Energy and Commerce is investigating allegations that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), in the course of executing a search warrant at a California health care provider’s corporate headquarters in March 2011, improperly seized the personal medical records of millions of American citizens in possible violation of the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution,” members of the committee wrote in a letter Tuesday to Acting IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel.
The letter to Werfel, which requires a response by June 25, comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed by an unn

Widow: Fort Worth Cops Were “Trigger Happy”

http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2013/05/28/w...t rigger-happy/
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A widow is seeking answers after her husband was shot and killed on his own property by Fort Worth police officers early Tuesday morning. “I think the police made a terrible mistake,” said Kathy Waller.
She said that a loud noise and bright light woke up her and her husband, 73-year-old Jerry Waller, shortly after midnight on Tuesday. He grabbed a gun and headed to the garage, she said, where Jerry Waller was then shot by police officers who were investigating a burglar alarm.
Waller thinks that the officers reacted too quickly. “Somebody just got a little trigger happy, and away they go,” she said.
Cpl. Tracey Knight with the Fort Worth Police Department explained, “He was armed with a handgun and officers fea

Patriot Act author comes out against NSA spying

We've gotten used to what "Big Government" looks like – Washington's unchecked deficit spending, the Obama administration's policing of the press and the IRS's targeting of conservative groups. But the problem is bigger than we thought. "Big Brother" is watching. And he is monitoring the phone calls and digital communications of every American, as well as of any foreigners who make or receive calls to or from the United States.
Last week, the Guardian reported that the Obama administration is collecting records of every call made to, from or within the US, as well as records of many digital communications. President Obama has tried to deflect criticism by claiming "every member of Congress has been briefed on this program." While some members of Congress were briefed – particularly those o

Mr. Obama, Tear Down This Police State

Twenty six years ago today, President Reagan made his famous "Mr. Gorbachev, Tear down this wall!" speech.
Senator Paul has an opportunity to seize this rhetoric against another monolithic enemy of freedom.
"Mr. Obama, Tear down this Wall! This wall of secrecy...this wall that has created the opposite of the transparency that you promised...this wall of warrantless searches...
Mr. President, tear down this wall!"
What do you think? Can someone get this to Senator Paul's staff? (Tell them

Mom: Officer shot kittens in front of my kids

Quote:
NORTH RIDGEVILLE, Ohio (WKYC) - The Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals wants Humane Officer Barry Accorti fired for allegedly shooting five kittens in a home's back yard on Monday.
OSPCA Executive Director Teresa Landon says Accorti should be fired and charged with five counts of animal cruelty.
Accorti retired as a sergeant with the North Ridgeville Police Department a few years ago and was hired as a part-time humane officer with the department.
Police tell WKYC that Accorti did not work Tuesday, but will be back on Wednesday.
Accorti responded to a home Monday afternoon where a feral mother cat and her five kittens were living in a woodpile.
He allegedly told the homeowner that shelters were full and that the cats would be going to kitty heaven. He the

Rand Paul (R.-Ky.) said to illegal aliens who want to live and work in the United States: “[W]e will find a place for you.”
Paul also said he envisions today’s illegal aliens becoming additional “taxpayers.”
“Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers,” said Paul.
Illegal aliens working in the United States today are not exempted from complying with the nation's tax laws anymore than they are exempted from complying

NSA's Verizon Spying Order Specifically Targeted Americans, Not Foreigners NSA's Verizon Spying Order Specifically Targeted Americans, Not Foreigners

I didn't see this, let me know if it has already been posted:
Quote:
The National Security Agency has long justified its spying powers by arguing that its charter allows surveillance on those outside of the United States, while avoiding intrusions into the private communications of American citizens. But the latest revelation of the extent of the NSA’s surveillance shows that it has focused specifically on Americans, to the degree that its data collection has in at least one major spying incident explicitly excluded those outside the United States.
In a top secret order obtained by the Guardian newspaper and published Wednesday evening, the FBI on the NSA’s behalf demanded that Verizon turn over all metadata for phone records originating in the United States for the three months beginning

Who Really Benefits from Inflation and Why You’re Not Wealthier

The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis released an interesting report analyzing the underlying fundamentals of why America’s economic growth level still remains quite anemic. The results won’t surprise many people—most American households have rebuilt only a fraction of the wealth lost during the recent recession.
According to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, household net worth peaked at $67.4 trillion during the fourth quarter of 2007. Household net worth then sunk to a low of $51.4 trillion in 2009, and has since rebounded to $66.1 trillion. (Source: “Annual Report 2012,” Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis web site, May 2013, accessed June 6, 2013.)
While it appears that nominal net worth has recovered 91% of the losses, the St. Louis Federal Reserve notes that this is not an accura

Rand Paul and the rise of the libertarian Republican (Wash Post) Rand Paul and the rise of the libertarian Republican (Wash Post)

By Chris Cillizza and Aaron Blake, Published: June 10, 2013 at 6:30 am
Give Sen. Rand Paul this: He very rarely misses a political pitch slung his way.
The latest evidence is Paul’s (R-Ky.) plan to launch a class action lawsuit against the government for the National Security Agency’s collection of phone records and monitoring of Internet data. “If we get 10 million Americans saying we don’t want our phone records looked at, then somebody will wake up and say things will change in Washington,” Paul argued during an appearance on “Fox News Sunday.”
Paul’s seizing on the NSA issue comes less than three months after he made national headlines for his filibuster of the nomination of now-CIA Director John Brennan. And both issues have a narrative string connecting them: Paul as the most visible

Democrats and Republicans Defend NSA Snooping

Katie Pavlich | Jun 10, 2013
Over the weekend, NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden publicly revealed his identity and told the world he was the guy who exposed vast snooping on U.S. citizens by the U.S. government. Naturally, the White House and Congress have been asked to respond to NSA actions. Both Democrats and Republicans are defending the secret monitoring of hundreds of millions of American phone calls each day.
Republican Senator John McCain on CNN Sunday:
Arizona Senator and former GOP Presidential candidate John McCain said Sunday the threat of terrorism in the United States “is getting worse,” and this validates the government’s controversial monitoring of all telephone calls and emails placed in the country.
Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union” McCain responded to host Candy C

How do you clean your teeth?

Ok this is a serious question. In the past 10 years I have barely brushed my teeth. I usually clean them by chewing on some celery or some other vegetable and rinsing my teeth with water. I haven't had one cavity since. In fact, the only cavities I've ever had were while brushing my teeth 3 times a day when I was younger. Also, I don't live in a town that fluoridates water at all.

Whistleblower Edward Snowden hailed as hero on social media

http://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/a...o -social-media
The response on social media to the unveiling of NSA’s biggest intelligence leak source, Edward Snowden, has been divided with some calling him a traitor, however the response to his coming out has been overwhelmingly positive, with the majority calling him a hero.
According to Buzzfeed, a technology platform, the current numbers on Twitter of
those calling Snowden a hero outnumbers 30-1 to those calling him a traitor.
There is currently a crowdfunding campaign for Snowden to "reward this type of extremely courageous behaviour", which has so far raised 3,478 US dollars.
Supporters have also started a White House petition asking for a "full, free, and absolute pardon", with 4,510 signatures collected at the moment.

Rand Paul says he’s key to uniting Senate, House on immigration

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said on Sunday that his Senate colleagues would have to go through him in order to win support from the House to successfully pass comprehensive immigration reform.

The libertarian senator has said he wants to bolster border security measures, a rallying cry for many Republicans.

Why is it inappropriate for leaks to put people "at risk"?

I was reading through the "41 powerpoint slides" post and had a thought. I always find it interesting that classified information supposedly ought be released only if it doesn't put anyone "at risk." As if the activities being exposed don't also put Americans at risk. As if the activities Assange exposed were not putting Americans at risk.
I just think this is such a stupid argument and it pisses me off when I hear people either claiming a leak puts people at risk or trying to argue that a leak was okay because it DIDN'T put anyone at risk. We should not be having a debate over whether a leak puts people at risk. We should be having a debate about the risk of blowback from our violent foreign policy; the risk faced by all the people targeted BY our foreign policy; the risk of living in an
